Rod Lyall 19:30
That was certainly eventful, with VRA and Kampong fighting out another ding-dong battle, Kampong holding on despite a determined late challenge by Hermes, and HCC dismissing VOC cheaply for a comfortable win. But the headline of the day, unfortunately, has to be the abandonment of the match between Rotterdam and HBS, in circumstances which are not yet entirely clear but which seem pretty unsavoury however you look at it. No doubt we’ll hear more about that in the coming days. For now, though, this is Rod Lyall saying thank you for joining us, and enjoy your evening/morning/afternoon.
VRA
241-9 (50 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
That’s too big an aask, and although Nashier finishes it with a straight drive for four, they have to be content with six off it, and Voorburg win by 12 runs.
VRA
235-9 (49 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Just four off Islam’s last over, so they need 19 off the final one from Van Vliet.
VRA
231-9 (48 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Adam Madgwick is struck on the pad first ball, the umpire’s finger goes up, and amazingly, VRA have lost three wickets in three balls. Hake in to join Nashier, aand plays out the rest of the over. Nashier hasn’t given up hope, though, driving Van Vliet through mid-off for four, and with two overs left VRA need 23. Nashier retains the strike with a single.
VRA
223-8 (46.2 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Thakur hits Jaynul islam to Glover at mid-on, bringing Abhinay in to join Nashier. This could still go either way. Or maybe not, as Abhinay repeats Zaidi’s mistake, looking for a second and run out aas the return beats his desperate dive.
VRA
221-6 (45.4 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
The pressure tells, as Zaidi pushes for two and is beaten home by the return. A very valuable 38 from him, but VRA are up against it now as Thakur joins Nashier. This is looking like a mirror-image of Thursday’s game against Kampong.
VRA
216-5 (45 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Plenty of scampering by Zaidi and Nashier keeps the game alive for VRA – 38 required off the last five.
Hermes DVS
257 a.o. (49.4 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Bangs picks up a third, Ralph Elenbaas caught by O’Dowd for 13, and then Sahil Kothari makes to pull Roy and gets an edge through to Van den Berg. Kampong win by 25 runs.
VRA
196-5 (42.3 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Padda swings across the line at Khawaja and is bowled for 74. Nashier in to join Zaidi, with the game swinging back Voorburg’s way.
Hermes DVS
246-8 (47.4 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Dutt hammers Roy over long on for six, but when he tries to repeat the dose he doesn’t fully get hold of it, and Bangs takes the catch. Dutt gone for 59 off 40, and that’s pretty much settled any remaining doubts.
VRA
194-4 (42 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Khawaja returns and concedes just three off his over, but eight off Mohsen keeps VRA more or less in touch with the required rate.
Hermes DVS
233-7 (46 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Aryan Dutt is another who has been struggling for runs, but coming in at eight today he’s produced a 34-ball 50* which, if it hasn’t quite been enough for victory – and one shouldn’t quite rule that out, I guess – it’s brought his side closer than one might have expected an hour or so ago.
VRA
182-4 (40 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
So 72 needed off the last 10, with Padda on 66* and Zaidi on 18*.
Hermes DVS
206-7 (42.4 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Braat goes to 52, but then he falls to one of the most amazing pieces of action you’ll ever see: Dutt drives Jacod back hard, the bowler dives to his right and as he gathers the ball he throws down the stumps at his end, giving Braat no time to react. Truly stunning.
VOC
143 a.o. (42.2 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Brown cleans up Hoseinbaks, Price left on 20*, and HCC win by 55 runs.
VRA
165-4 (36 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Padda gets his fifty with a single off Van Vliet, and now he begins to bat a little more freely. He’s gone to 57*, and VRA need 89 off 14 overs.
VOC
139-9 (41.4 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Van Wingerden bowled by Floyd for 5. Hoseinbaks the last man.
Hermes DVS
193-6 (41 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Dutt declares his intentions by pulling Bangs onto the covers below the scoreboard for six, and in Jacod’s next over Braat brings up his fifty. A rearguard action, but an admirable one. 90 needed off nine.
VRA
150-4 (33 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
They’re back on in the Bos, and three off the rest of Islam’s over get VRA marginally back in front on DLS. Ibaad Zaidi in now with Padda’ who’s on 49*.
Hermes DVS
170-6 (37.5 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
A hard-earned half-century to Elenbaas, but then he pulls the next ball he receives from Buys straight to Jacod at square leg and departs for exactly 50. Braat still there on 45*, joined now by Dutt.
VOC
127-8 (38.4 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Malik gone, bowled by Kloppenburg for 4. Van Wingerden in to join Price.
VRA
147-4 (32.1 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Shariz gets a tickle from Jaynul Islam’s first ball through to Croes, and that couldn;t have come at a worse time for VRA, as it’s startd raining and the covers are on. With that wicket the DLS par score goes from 133 to 147, so at this precise moment the scores are tied. Shariz made 19, and Padda’s on 49*.
Hermes DVS
159-5 (35 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
They take another drink in Schiedam, with Elenbaas now on 44* and Braat on 41*, the partnership worth 84.
VOC
112-7 (35 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Crowley returns to remove Harhangi, caught by Entrop for 21. and three balls later Trijzelaar gets Fourie, caught by Brown for 18. That’s a huge turnaround, with Price and Upadhyaya now at the crease. Except that Upadhyaya hits a return catch to Trijzelaar, and VOC are on the ropes.
VRA
143-3 (31 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Shariz settles things down while Padda proceeds inexorably towards a maiden Topklasse fifty. Jaynul Islam back from Mulder’s End, but the over goes for nine, inducing Croes to run down the pitch at one point to give his bowler some advice. The odds definitely favour VRA at this stage (not that I’m a betting man).
Hermes DVS
131-5 (30 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Elenbaas and Braat are batting very sensibly against the spin of Buys and Jacod, but it’s hard to see them achieving the sort of gear-change they need to get Hermes back in contention. They’re now on 31* and 27* respectively.
VOC
99-4 (31 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Exactly 100 required with 19 overs left. This game has all the indications of going down to the wire.
VRA
115-3 (25.6 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Nidamanuru plays Glover into the off side, looks for a single, is sent back, slips, and is beaten by the return to Croes. The game’s back in the balance as Shariz Ahmad joins Padda.
Hermes DVS
106-5 (25 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Elenbaas and Braat still battling away, as Jacod comes into the attack. Realistically, it looks like an NRR damage-limitation exercise at this stage, with with 177 needed off 25 overs.
Rotterdam
8-0 (1 over)
HBS
226-8 (50 overs)
The match has been abandoned, apparently following an incident involving a player and a spectator on the boundary. No doubt we will learn more in the coming days.
VRA
109-2 (22.2 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Cassidy goes, lofting the returning Glover out to Jaynul Islam and departing for 44. Nidamanuru in to join Padda.
VOC
87-4 (27 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Brown back from the Airport End, and VOC are seemingly finding runs no easier to pick up than HCC did. Harhangi and Fourie, though, are still there.
VRA
108-1 (22 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Hundred up for VRA, and they’re staying in touch with the required rate at least, with plenty of wickets in hand. A six by Cassidy off Mohsen, lofted over the covers, certainly helps the cause. He’s on 44* now, Padda on 34*.
Hermes DVS
75-5 (18.5 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Statham chases a lifting delivery from Bangs, edging it high to Van den Berg behind the stumps. Braat joins Elenbaas as Hermes appear to be sliding towards another defeat.
VOC
67-4 (19.2 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
HCC fight back with a double strike by Floyd: Butt caught by Staal for 20, then Van der Meulen caught and bowled for 1. Big wicket that, and now Harhangi’s joined by Francois Fourie.
VRA
85-1 (17 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
No sign of a breakthrough as they take a drink in the Bos, with Padda now on 25* and Cassidy on 31*.
Hermes DVS
59-4 (12.6 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Lachlan Bangs from the Pavilion End, and after a big shout for LBW against Jamil, the batter falls to an extraordinary one-handed catch by Van den Berg, who sticks out his glove to grab a low take off a fine edge. Nick Statham in at six.
VOC
65-2 (16.4 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Kloppenburg on, and he strikes immediately, Montague caught by Trijzelaar for 21. Harhangi in at four.
VRA
68-1 (14 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Waseem Mohsen on from the City End, Cassidy stroking him through cover point for four. Cassidy and Padda are looking pretty confident at this stage, with Don Glover operating now from Mulder’s End.
Hermes DVS
55-3 (11.6 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Rushmere’s weird season continues, as he makes to drive Peinaar Buys and edges to Roy at slip. He goes for six, and Hermes are in serious trouble as Olivier Elenbaas joins Jamil.
Rotterdam
8-0 (1 over)
HBS
226-8 (50 overs)
No sign of a resumption as yet at the Zomercomplex. Still unclear what happened to caause the players to leave the field.
VOC
48-1 (13 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Justin Trijzelaar and Casper Snoeck into the attack now, but Butt and Montague are looking well set.
Hermes DVS
41-2 (8.2 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Not one but two wickets at the Loopuyt Oval: Kumar bowls Ostling for 14 with a beautifully-pitched full delivery, and then Doyle, on 21, edges Roy over second slip and Jacob leaps high to grab the catch at full stretch. Rushmere in to join Mussayab Jamil.
VRA
43-1 (8.2 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Singh hammers Islam over long on for six, but the next one’s right on the money, Singh plays around it, and is bowled. He made 26, and is succeeded by Sam Cassidy .
VOC
35-1 (10 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Kooistra gone, caught by Worden off Crowley for 18. Caleb Montague in to join Samir Butt.
Rotterdam
8-0 (1 over)
HBS
226-8 (50 overs)
We have a situation at the Zomercomplex. After that first over there appears to have been some discussion among the players, some shouting off camera, and the players have left the field.
VRA
29-0 (6 overs)
Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
What you don’t do when bowling to Singh is give him any room, and when Islam does he’s lashed through cover point for another boundary. Padda, on the other hand, comes down the wicket to Khawaja and lofts him over mid-on for another.
VOC
23-0 (6 overs)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
Kooistra immediately goes onto the attack, as he did against Voorburg, and VOC make a positive start to chasing a comparatively small target.
Hermes DVS
10-1 (3 overs)
Kampong
282-9 (50 overs)
Alex Roy and Shashank Kumar share the new ball for Kampong, bowling to Ash Ostling and Daniel Doyle-Calle. .
VRA

Voorburg
253-9 (50 overs)
Jaynul Islam from Mulder’s End for Voorburg, Singh driving him through the covers to get off the mark. Lovepreet Padda takes three off Farhaad Khawaja to do likewise.
Rotterdam
8-0 (1 over)
HBS
226-8 (50 overs)
Kent Goedeke from the Equestrian Centre End as Rotterdam begin their chase, Musa Ahmad cutting his first ball to the point boundary, then sweeping his four in front of square for four more. Joris van Oosterom to bowl the second.
VOC
4-0 (1 over)
HCC
198-7 (50 overs)
First to restart are VOC, Bart Kooistra taking a four off Josh Brown’s second delivery to get things under way. Daniel Crowley to bowl the second.
Rod Lyall 14:48
A fairly absorbing first half, then, with Kampong looking to be on top against Hermes, and HCC in trouble at VOC. But you can’t judge the conditions until both sides have batted, and the other two games are pretty well balanced. The stand-out individual efforts Edwards’ 131 for Kampong, and Vikram Singh’s six-for against Voorburg. Join us after the break for what should be a very entertaining second stanza.

There’s definitely a bit of rain about, but the latest radar images suggest that we could be lucky and have little or no interference from the weather. And let’s hope there won’t be any technical glitches like the one on Thursday which deprived us of a view of the amazing match at Westvliet – or even a live scorecard. News of the tosses shortly.
Rod Lyall 10:15
Greetings once again, and welcome to our coverage of the fifth round of the 2026 Topklasse competition. If it’s anything like as extraordinary as Thursday’s Ascension Day games, we’ll be in for a treat. A couple of the matches are at least as consequential as those were, and I’ll be here (sans Bertus again) to bring you all the day’s action, or at least as much of it as I can manage.
Rod Lyall 20:17
That was, by any standards, a pretty remarkable day’s cricket. Of the two full-length matches, one was a wipe-out, HBS demolishing VOC to secure their first win of the season, while the other went down to the wire, Kampong eking out a one-wicket victory. HCC were untroubled in winning their 35-over game against Hermes-DVS after seizing the initiative in the first two overs, and Voorburg toppled unbeaten Rotterdam by hitting 235 for two in 25 overs, including a sensational century by young Cedric de Leede, for whom an international cap must be getting pretty close, and winning by just 10 runs after a spirited chase. Another round of matches on Saturday, so do join us then. In the meantime this is Rod Lyall saying goodnight, and take care out there!
Voorburg
235-2 (25 overs)
Rotterdam
225-6 (24/25 overs)
Needing 19 off the final over, bowled by Waseem Mohsen, Rotterdam can only manage 8, and Voorburg win by 10 runs. 460 runs for eight wickets in 50 overs. What a shame we weren’t all able to watch it. But many thanks to the admirable Tim de Leede, who kept me posted throughout. Any mistakes were mine, not his!
Voorburg
235-2 (25 overs)
Rotterdam
214-5 (23.3/25 overs)
21 required off nine balls . . . Saqib 50*
Voorburg
235-2 (25 overs)
Rotterdam
169-5 (20/25 overs)
18 off those two, so it’s still on! Saqib Zulfiqar and Burhan Niaz the men at the crease.
Voorburg
235-2 (25 overs)
Rotterdam
151-5 (18/25 overs)
Rotterdam need 85 off seven overs, but it looks unlikely with five down.
HCC
140-3 (25.3/35 overs)
Hermes
136-8 (35/35 overs)
But then Ralph feeds Kloppenburg a leg-side full toss, and he needs no encouragement to smash it over midwicket for the winning six. He finishes on 51*, as does Staal, and HCC win by 7 wickets.
HCC
132-3 (25/35 overs)
Hermes
136-8 (35/35 overs)
Ralph Elenbaas goes for just two singles off his next, and brother Olivier then returns from the Van Hogenhoucklaan End. Kloppenburg tries unsuccessfully to smack him into that thoroughfare, and has to be content with a single. A very good over, that.
Voorburg
235-2 (25 overs)
Rotterdam
115-3 (13/25 overs)
HCC
129-3 (23/35 overs)
Hermes
136-8 (35/35 overs)
They could pick them up in singles, but that’s not either of these batters’ style, and Kloppenburg slog-sweeps Kothari for six over square leg. He’s obviously keen to finish it quickly, going after Kothari again in his next over, but initally with less success. Then, after Staal brings up his half-century, Kloppenburg smacks another, in front of square this time. After a long delay he does it again, and HCC need just eight to win.
HCC
100-3 (20/35 overs)
Hermes
136-8 (35/35 overs)
Staal now on 46*, Kloppenburg on 16*, and HCC are on the brink of two very valuable points.
Voorburg
235-2 (25 overs)
Rotterdam
97-2 (10/25 overs)
Rotterdam aren’t out of this, though, needing 127 off the last 15 overs with eight wickets in hand.
Kampong
185-9 (48.4 overs)
VRA
184 a.o. (49.1 overs)
Abhinay bowls the penultimate over, and Kumar turns the first ball square for a couple. There’s a conference, the advice apparently being to give the ball more air. Which he does, but the second time Kumar’s waiting for it, and strokes him into the covers for the two which ensure that Kampong win by 1 wicket! You really couldn;t ask for a better finish than that!.
Kampong
181-9 (48 overs)
VRA
184 a.o. (49.1 overs)
A single apiece and an unsuccessful appeal for LBW off Shariz’s last, and Kampong need four.
Kampong
179-9 (47 overs)
VRA
184 a.o. (49.1 overs)
A single, a bye and three wides in Nidmanuru’s next over, and they need 6 off three.
HCC
75-3 (16.1/35 overs)
Hermes
136-8 (35/35 overs)
Yet another skied catch – I’ve never seen so many in a single day. This time it’s Gorlee, gone for 25 as he’s caught by Braat at mid-on off Kothari. Staal on 37*, Kloppenburg in.
Kampong
174-9 (46 overs)
VRA
184 a.o. (49.1 overs)
Swanepoel twice pulls Shariz in the 46th over, the first going all the way to the boundary, the second producing a couple. And the deficit’s down to 10.
HCC
68-2 (14/35 overs)
Hermes
136-8 (35/35 overs)
Despite the appearance of an injury earlier, Dutt in putting in a handy spell, just 7 from his four overs so far, and, paired up with Sahil Kothari, they’ve slowed the scoring rate significantly.
Kampong
164-9 (43 overs)
VRA
184 a.o. (49.1 overs)
While there’s life there’ s hope: Swanepoel and Kumar hang in there, but 21 are still needed, and they’re starting to run out of overs.
Voorburg
235-2 (25 overs)
Rotterdam
18-1 (3/25 overs)
Scoreboard pressure tells, as it was always likely to: Musa Ahmad the first to go.
HBS
337-7 (50 overs)
VOC
175 a.o. (35 overs)
All over at Craeyenhout. In a last hurrah Van der Meulen plants Goedeke in among the bean bags beyond the midwicket boundary, but then the spinner pins Hoseinbaks to pick up a well-earned five-for. Van der Meulen 75*, but HBS win by 162 runs.
Kampong
156-9 (37.2 overs)
VRA
184 a.o. (49.1 overs)
Jacod, on 33, tries a reverse sweep, top-edges to the keeper, who takes the simplest of catches. Kumar in to join Swanepoel for the last rites.
HBS
337-7 (50 overs)
VOC
167-9 (34 overs)
A fourth wicket for Goedeke, Schoonheim this time, another to get under the ball and sky a catch for the bowler, who drops back to take it. Asief Hoseinbaks the last man. .
HCC
54-2 (8.5/35 overs)
Hermes
136-8 (35/35 overs)
Gorlee pulls Herrington for six, and with Staal now on 30* off 27, HCC seem to be cruising. That one went a long way, one suspects into a distant walled garden, repository of many cricket balls over the years.

HBS
337-7 (50 overs)
VOC
154-8 (30.4 overs)
Malik goes after Boddendijk and is caught at deep mid-on for 20. He and his skipper have an exchange of words as he departs. And in the next over Upadhyaya skies Goedeke to Mason at backward point. Van der Meulen the unhappy witness to all this, now on 60* but running out of partners. And it gets worse when Van Wingerden it caught at point first ball.
Kampong
153-6 (35 overs)
VRA
184 a.o. (49.1 overs)
As long as Jacod and Roy are there, though, Kampong still have hope, and they’ve reduced the margin to 32 with 15 overs left. It’s always all been about the wickets.
HCC
33-2 (4.4 overs)
Hermes
136-8 (35/35 overs)
Worden pulls Elenbaas effortlessly for six, but when he tries to do it again he misses, and bails and stumps go flying. Boris Gorlee joins Staal, who has 23* off 13 at this stage.
HBS

VRA

HBS
337-7 (50 overs)
VOC

Kampong
109-4 (24 overs)
VRA
184 a.o. (49.1 overs)
Nashier into the attack, but he drops too short, and Jacod pulls him twice through the leg side for four. Jacod and Bangs have got the Kampong innings back on track – there’s little or no scoreboard pressure, and VRA are in serious need of another wicket.
HBS

VOC

Price’s first three overs cost just a single between them, but now Botha goes after him, lofting him straight for four and then going even bigger, all the way into the trees beyond the cycle path. De Mey the sheetanchor at the other end, with 3* off 26.

Roy gets the breakthrough at Maarschalkerweerd, as Padda gets the faintest of edges through to Van den Berg and goes for 12. Teja Nidamanuru, who’s dropped down to four, is the new man, joining Cassidy on 19*.

Walbrugh not (yet) looking entirely at ease against Harhangi and Price, but it’s time in the middle he needs, and he’s still there. Except now he’s not, because as I write this he spoons an easy catch to Fourie at extra cover and departs for 7. Lehan Botha joins De Mey, as Walbrugh’s miserable run continues.

Padda and Cassidy content to pick up singles after the early loss of Singh’s wicket, but when Kumar strays onto leg stump Cassidy lifts him over square leg. Some initial doubt, but then it’s signalled a six. The next is a overcompenstory full toss outside off stump, but Cassidy can only push it away for a single. Next over Padda flashes at Roy outside off, gets an edge but it beats Van den Berg’s desperate dive and runs down for four.

Roman Harhangi starts from the Sportlaan End, Julien de Mey and Tayo Walbrugh again opening for HBS. De Mey off the mark with a single into the covers, and then Walbrugh turns him behind square for a couple. A single in the same area completes the scoring. Ethan Price from the Scoreboard End.

Cassidy off the mark with a drive off Ingram into the covers for three, and after two Ingram overs Alex Roy takes over from the University End. He has some trouble with his line initially, bowling too much down leg, but after a couple of deliveries he adjusts and is driven for four through the covers by Padda for his pains.

VRA
11-1 (2.6 overs)
Three singles off Ingram’s first. Padda shows some intent against Kumar, using his feet but then forced to defend. And when the bowler gives Singh some width outside off stump (never recommended), he’s crisply struck to the point boundary. The next one, though, is angled in to middle stump, and Singh edges to Roy at first slip, who takes a very good low catch. Sam Cassidy in at three.

So they start very nearly on time, Shashank Kumar from the Pavilion End to Vikram Singh. Third ball strays onto leg stump, and Singh tucks him square to get off the mark. Which brings right-hander Lovepreet Padda on strike in his first Topklasse game. Three dots to finish. Lorenzo Ingram from the University End.

Covers off at Maarschalkerweed, too, and the stumps are in, so things are definitely looking up. It seems that VRA will be batting, though we don’t yet know who won the toss.

Things are more promising at Craeyenhout, where the covers are off and the sun is doing its best to shine. There are advantages in having an artificial outfield!

The overnight rain has taken its toll at De Diepput, we hear, and the start will be delayed. More news when we get it.

My esteeemed colleague has lit out for Cyprus, where he’s covering the first sub-regional qualifier for the 2028 World T20 Cup (really, is it that time already?), so I’m afraid you’re stuck with me all day today. I’m sure he’s with us in spirit.

The top of the morning to you (or of whatever time of day it is where you are), and welcome to our coverage of the Ascension Day round of this season’s Topklasse. Four stonking matches for you today, all of them vital in different ways, and we have to hope that the weather doesn’t play too big a hand in the outcomes. And indeed, that there ARE outcomes. The radar prognostication has improved over the past hour, so fingers crossed!
