Bertus de Jong 18:55
De Kok said at the break they’d have to bowl well and back it up in the field to have a chance, it was the latter that won it for them you’d say. Cracking finish to another hard-fought dogfight in the Bos, though VRA’s scorer rightly remarks that the 22 wides VRA bowled were more than costly in the end. Nidamanuru looked set to take the hosts home, but just ran out of gas and ans support at the death. His innings rather summed up VRA’s day; good, but not quite good enough. VOC gave nothing away in the field and as winners by 2 runs can reflect that every sprint and every stop mattered. Do check back soon for the wrap, Sander’s photos from de Diepput and of course the preview for the business end of Phase One, which is rapidly bearing down on us. Until then, I’m off to see if there’s any of those blue bottles left.
Rod Lyall 18:53
So, a day which has produced changes at the top and bottom, with Voorburg easing past Sparta by virtue of their pretty overwhelming win at Westvliet and HBS not only moving level on points with Excelsior, but edging ahead of them and Salland and out of the wooden-spoon position on net run rate. Punjab, HCC and VOC, after a titanic battle with VRA, improved their chances of ending Phase 1 in the top six with wins over the other main contenders, who will be sweating a bit during the two final rounds next weekend. On the individual side, Tayo Walbrugh took his run tally to 519 from eight innings, and Shariz Ahmad collected another five wickets to give him 23 for the season. It’s been another remarkable day’s cricket, culminating in that magnificent finish in the Bos
VRA
242-9 (50 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Short and whipped around to fine leg, Abid has no interest in the second. Turmaine needs four off the last ball. It’s full, into the pad, goes nowhere. Schoonheim’s done it for the Bloodhounds, VOC win by 2 runs.
VRA
240-9 (49.4 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Wide of off but not wide enough. The next is back of a length and through him, Turmaine advances on the next but can’t connect again, six off three needed now. Driven to mid off, just one, surely the game now? Abid on strike with five needed off two.
VRA
239-9 (49 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Dot, then a single, advantage VOC. Inside edge and Turmaine’s almost half-way down, overthrows and two. Then two more wide of third. Works a single round the corner, one more out to cover, Turmaine retains strike. They can get them in singles now. Schoonheim to bowl the last.
VRA
232-9 (48 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Wide down leg now, then a single into the on side. Risky, Turmaine needs to get the strike back now.Into the pad but angling down, maybe an edge on it too as it’s called a run as Turmaine gets across. 13 needed off the last two, Edwards still.
VRA
229-9 (47.4 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Wide outside off first up and they run one on the fumble, two tight twos to long off and cover sweeper gets Nidamanuru into the 90s, but 93 is where he ends, heave across the line into the pads and runs into a raised finger. Visser in, wide outside off, next is straight, Visser’s gone back to it and missed, bowled. Abid last man with two to face. 16 needed.
VRA
212-7 (46 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
First ball of the 45th and Nidamanuru drives through the covers, doesn’t bother running and risky call that but it does beat the man to the rope. Rushed two off an inside edge and he’s just home. Looks pretty puffed out there. Hoseinbaks bowls his last, four off it, getting tense. Edwards still from the City End.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
201-4 (45.4 overs)
It needs only four balls: a four and a single for Del Bianco, a four by Walbrugh to level the scores, and then another single to make sure of the points. Walbrugh finishes on 81*, Del Bianco on 12*. HBS win by 6 wickets.
VRA
200-7 (44 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Edwards and Hoseinbaks turning the screw here, Peiris struggling to find singles until the final ball of each over, where he manages to steal the strike twice. Pressure tells and Peiris comes down to Hoseinbaks misses and bowled. Turmaine in, and VRA have batted themselves into trouble here, Nidamanuru still there on 70* but has been starved of strike. 45 needed from six overs. Edwards to continue, Hoseinbaks has one left.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
191-4 (45 overs)
Just ten required now. Rens van Troost to bowl to Del Bianco from the City End. No century for Walbrugh today, but this is as important an innings in the context of the season as any he’s played. He’s on 76*.
HCC
225-6 (47.4 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
It is now, as the saying goes, as Overdijk lofts Hans over mid-on for the winning boundary. He finishes on 38*, with Doram on 15*. HCC win by 4 wickets.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
180-4 (42.5 overs)
Drummond tries to work Ingram to leg, fails to connect, and the umpire’s finger goes up as he’s struck on the pad. Del Bianco joins Walbrugh, who’s on 74*. 21 needed.
VRA
187-6 (40.1 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Balbirnie and Nidamanuru have started positively after drinks, Hoseinbaks and Edwards now for VOC but the score’s ticking up swiftly. 54 needed off ten. Conferences now but the upshot is Edwards to continue, and proves a good call as Balbirnie chases a wide one and is caught at gully. Peiris in.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
204-4 (45.1 overs)
Minhas and Sikander see their side home, but Salland fight all the way, Bartholomew returning from the Railway End and conceding only a wide. Then Minhas clips Naqash to the midwicket boundary to finish on 47* as Punjab win by 6 wickets.
HCC
203-6 (44.6 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
Just when it seemed to be all over, Floyd falls to Hobson, top-edging a rising delivery outside off to Hans at deep mid-on. He goes for 17, Doram in to join Overdijk on 31*. 22 still needed.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
164-3 (40 overs)
A long conference among the Excelsior side as HBS continue on their way, and the upshot is that Hart bowls the last over before the final powerplay. Walbrugh drives him sweetly through mid-on for four, and there’s a definite air of disillusionment in the home side. 37 needed off the last ten.
VRA
157-5 (35 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
“There’s no Peter Borren to save them” is the shout on the field. Scott Edwards into the attack for some left arm spin and well that’s a rank full toss shovelled down the throat of long on. Chat gets wickets. Dutt goes for five. Balbirnie in.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
170-4 (40 overs)
Ten overs left at Het Schootsveld as well, with 32 needed. Things looking grim for Salland.
HCC
172-5 (40 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
Into the final powerplay with 52 needed, and Floyd and Overdijk still together. ACC have given themselves a chance, but they have to keep taking wickets.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
153-4 (35.2 overs)
Ganesan returns from the Pavilion End, and when Riaz, on 66, tries to pull him through mid-on he holes out to Naqash. Sikander, the Last of the Zulfiqars, in at six to join Minhas.
VRA
148-4 (33 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
And one brings two as Van Luin is bowled for one. Dutt in at six. Bit of a wobble for VRA of a sudden. Wicket maiden, still Niaz from the other end.
HCC
153-5 (35.5 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
That’s the wicket ACC so badly needed, and it comes in bizarre fashion: Zaidi bowls a wide, they come back for a second and the throw from Potdar on the fine leg boundary hits the stumps with Vandiar short! Overdijk in to join Floyd, and ACC can see a chink of light.
VRA
145-3 (30 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Fifty for Teja scooping Jain over his shoulder for three to deep fine, and here is Niaz now at Mulder’s end. And he finds the breakthrough at once, Smal forward to defend and is that an inside edge? Hard to tell from here but the stumps are a mess. Bowled for 54. 112 was the partnership, van Luin the new man in.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
141-3 (33.1 overs)
Fifty for Barresi as well, but when Heggelman returns he tries rather awkwardly to pull him and the umpire’s finger goes up. He’s out for 52; Walbrugh still there on 55*, joined now by Drummond.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
148-3 (34 overs)
Riaz brings up his fifty, and has moved on to 61* now. Minhas is on 17*, and Salland, too, are badly in need of a wicket. Ghulam Nasir on now from the Railway End.
VRA
136-2 (28 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
O’Dowd’s second delivery is a drag down pulled to the rope behind square by Smal, more good running and nine off it. His next over goes even worse, Smal stepping in to slam him over long on for six. Ten off I., Still Schoonheim at the other end, Smal goes to fifty with a back foot punch out to long off for one. Nidamanuru at the other end closing in on a half century too, he’s on 48* now. Jain back, bit odd that Niaz hasn’t bowled yet.
HCC
152-4 (35.2 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
HCC, likewise, look to be heading for victory as long as Vandiar’s still there, but Zaidi strikes an important blow when Kloppenburg clips him to leg and is caught by Mark Wolfe. Clayton Floyd in at six.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
117-2 (31 overs)
Yet another half-century for Walbrugh, this one off 81 deliveries. Barresi’s on 33*, and as long as this pair’s together HBS are well on top.
VRA
105-2 (24 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Smal and Nidamanuru warming to their work, Smal skips down to Hoseinbaks and drives through long off for four, Nidamanuru brings up the hundred next over cutting Schoonheim behind point for four more. Schoonheim seems irked at this and the next few balls are appreciably quicker, the third beating Smal’s outside edge, but otherwise has been going VRA’s way since drinks. Desperate times etc, Max O’Dowd’s going to have a bowl.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
108-2 (28 overs)
Umar Baker on for Hart from the City End, just two off his first over. Walburgh’s advanced to 47*, Barresi on 27*.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
112-3 (27.2 overs)
Saqib has been looking likely to cut loose, but Naqash gets a straight one through him and he’s bowled for 40. Riaz on 42* now, joined by Shoaib Minhas.
VRA
85-2 (21 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Schoonheim on after drinks and driven for four through extra by Smal. Good running for the rest of the over brings nine off it. Still Hoseinbaks at the other end, big shout on Smal for LBW but no joy, he didn’t hit it but can’t say much about the line from here. Four more to Nidamanuru driving through extra again last ball, good start after drinks for the hosts.
HCC
122-3 (30 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
Aryan Kumar on from the Scoreboard End, with Hobson back from the other. Vandiar is looking pretty menacing, supported by young Teun Kloppenburg; he’s on 25*, and ACC need to get him if they’re to have any chance of a win here. 102 needed off 20.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
99-2 (26 overs)
Naqash’s medium pace replaces Ganesan’s spin from the Pavilion End, still Gopinath from the other. Riaz on to 41* now, Saqib on 28*. Salland badly need a wicket or two.
VRA
65-2 (18 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Drinks here at the Bos where Smal and Nidamanuru are steadying the innings. Hoseinbaks has bowled two tidy overs from the City End, and the asking rate is creeping up, but still manageable for now. 180 needed from 32.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
81-2 (22 overs)
Hart on for Ingram, but Walbrugh and Barresi, who joined him after drinks, have picked up where they left off against Salland on Thursday, and this is starting to look ominous for Excelsior.
HCC
105-3 (24.1 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
Alphonse lofts Hans over long on for six, Vandiar hammering two more in his next to take the total into three figures, Then Alphonse, on 46, comes down the wicket to Arya, can’t get to the pitch, and hits a sharp return catch, which the bowler takes as he leaps to his left.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
79-2 (21 overs)
Spin from both ends now as Gopinath and Ganesan operate in tandem, but Riaz and Saqib have moved on to 33* and 17* respectively, keeping the scoreboard moving with singles and the occasional boundary.
VRA
50-2 (13 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Shot of the innings so far as Smal goes back and drives Jain hard through the on side for four, two balls later Nidamanuru cracks him through long off for four more to bring up the fifty. Hoornweg replaces Fletcher at Mulder’s End.
HCC
81-2 (20.5 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
One brings two, as Gorlee slices Arya to deepish point, where Hobson takes the catch. Vandiar in at four.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
56-2 (15.5 overs)
Ingram on from the City End, Rens van Troost from the other. His first over’s a bit messy, starting with a no ball and including a couple of wides as well. Pote and Walbrugh now on 26* and 22* respectively. They’re gradually putting HBS into a . . . scrub that, Pote comes looking for a single as Walbrugh pushes the ball to midwicket, he’s sent back, and Hart’s return to Ingram is too quick for him. Cue drinks.
VRA
34-2 (11 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
VOC keeping things tight in the field, fantastic stop from Jain at extra saves a certain four, and he himself profits from the pressure next over as Singh rocks back to pull, miscued high over mid on where Fletcher tracks back calmly and takes a fine catch as it drops over his shoulder. Nidamanuru at four, VRA rattled.
HCC
70-1 (17.6 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
Mahesh Hans gets the much-needed breakthrough, Staal trying to loft him into Van Hogenhoucklaan and finding Raza instead. He made 33, and gives way to Gorlee, with Alphonse now on 28.
Bertus de Jong 14:51
Vikram Singh, m’colleague confirms, is playing in his 100th Topklasse match today. At 20 years and 131 days, our suspicion is he’s the youngest ever to reach that milestone. Any other contenders? Answers on a postcard . . .
VRA
27-1 (8 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
Tough chance as Rasool cuts Fletcher uppishly in front of point, where it’s just out of reach for Niaz and spins away for four. Fletcher has his revenge in the next howeever, Rasool playing across the line and struck on the pad, sustained appeal and up goes the finger. Smal in at three.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
41-2 (12.5 overs)
And it’s Lubbers who gets the second, as Asad Zulfiqar gets a tickle down the leg side and Ottachchige dives to his left to grab an outstanding one-handed catch. He goes for 17, with Saqib in at four to join Riaz.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
28-1 (10 overs)
Given the new ball in preference to Michael Hart, Heggelman too has bowled well up front, but Pote and Walbrugh are still there, building a foundation after the early loss of Mason.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
32-1 (10 overs)
Bartholomew is generating good pace, and his first five overs have yielded just 9 runs for Rehmat Zulfiqar’s wicket. Reinder Lubbers has been more expensive, but he continues from the Railway End.
HCC
43-0 (10 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
At the end of the initial powerplay HCC look to be in charge, Staal lofting Reddy over wide mid-on for six. Kuhn turns to Arya as soon as the fielding restrictions are eased.
VRA
5-0 (2 overs)
VOC
244 all out (48.4 overs)
And after a rather lengthy lunch, we’re back. Singh and Rasool for the home side. VOC start with spin, Arnav Jain takes the new ball, and opens with a maiden to Rasool. Fletcher from Mulder’s End, Singh off the mark tuvking a back of a length ball to leg, Rasool pulling high over midwicket for three. One more for Singh to fine leg last ball, Jain to continue.
HCC
19-0 (5 overs)
ACC
224 all out (49.2 overs)
It’s been a while since HCC got off to a decent start, but this one’s looking promising, aided by some rather wayward bowling from Reddy in a stiff but fitful breeze.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
19-1 (3.2 overs)
Rehmat’s run of low scores continues, as he drives rather airily (and aerially) and finds Raxworthy at point. Mohsin Riaz in at three.
Bertus de Jong 14:51
“Not bad, would have liked some more” says Tim de Kok, clarifying that he’s speaking about both runs and lunch. “We’ll have to bowl well and back it up in the field.” Turmaine agrees, it’ll take some chasing but short of par. “Eddie was great, and we bowled well to the big guns up top, but overall not our best with the ball.” He’s still fairly confident though, “it’s flat”.
Excelsior
200-9 (50 overs)
HBS
5-1 (1.3 overs)
And at Thurlede, where Heggelman bowls Reece Mason with the third ball of the second over. Tayo Walbrugh in to join Pote.
HCC
5-0 (2 overs)
ACC
223 all out (49.2 overs)
The chase has started at De Diepput as well, Hobson opening with a maiden to Ratha Alphonse. Joseph Reddy from the Van Hogenhoucklaan End, and after a couple of wides Alphonse is off the mark with a lofted drive over mid-on.
Salland
201-7 (50 overs)
Punjab
8-0 (1 over)
They’re back out at Het Schootsveld, Reinder Lubbers taking the new ball from the Railway End and bowling to Rehmat Zulfiqar, who survives a big appeal for leg-before first ball and then drives the third just backward of square for four. The last runs off the edge to the third-man boundary. Fraser Bartholomew from the Pavilion End.
Bertus de Jong 14:51
So today was indeed the day that VOC’s middle order stood up, with skipper Tim de Kok leading the way with a counter-attacking 65 after the Big 3 departed. The hosts came back at the back end though, with the last four wickets falling for just 20 runs. 244 is still a solid score however, and VRA haven’t helped their cause any with 22 of those coming in wides. “ Below par” reckons our groundsman here, though of course he would say that. True though that there didn’t look to be any demons in the pitch, though it seamed a bit early. VRA probably the happier of the two sides at the break, we’ll be back with the chase after lunch.

VOC

Visser wraps it up in the penultimate over, spearing one into the base of Fletcher’s stumps to complete his five-fer. He finishes with figures of 5-34, VOC falling six short of the 250-mark.
Voorburg
135-1 (21.1 overs)
Sparta
132 all out (29.5 overs)
Another of the season’s pastings ends with Croes lofting Kroesen high over midwicket for six. With apparent injuries to Malik, Bukhari and Snoep, Sparta were on their uppers by the finish, but in truth they lost it long before that, when the batting imploded against Voorburg’s leg-spinners. Gigani finishes with a 58-ball 71, Croes with 37 from 44. Voorburg win by 9 wickets.

Visser’s keeping up a hostile pace here, Hoseinbaks largely opts to evade anything short. Dutt back from Mulder’s end, and tidy from him again. Next over Visser offers Hoseinbaks a bit of width, flashes at it and caught Singh in the gully. Fletcher last man.
Voorburg
86-1 (16 overs)
Sparta
132 all out (29.5 overs)
Kroesen into the attack as Sparta run through their options in search of wickets, but Voorburg need only 47 now. Gigani on 44* off 40, Croes on 25*.
Excelsior

It ends with a run-out, as Reddy comes back for a second and is beaten by a direct him from Doram in the deep. You’d think that ACC might have taken that total if they’d been offered it at 11 o’clock.

Nidamanuru back, and that’s the wicket they wanted, albeit rather later than they’d have liked. De Kok’s down the track and looking to slam that over midwicket, edged to backward point and Rasool takes a simple catch. He goes for 65 off 59 having done a fine job for his side, but clearly feels he could have done more. Hoorweg at ten, Visser from the City end.

De Kok still going strong, in the slot from Singh and thumped over wide long on for six, then the next ball guided through vacant third slip for a hard run three. Ingram loses Van Troost, who cuts extravagantly at Adendorff and is caught by Klein. But he reaches his century, the tenth of his Topklasse career, swinging Del Bianco high and handsome over the midwicket boundary to move to 103. Next ball he’s gone, slog-sweeping and bowled.
Voorburg
56-1 (11 overs)
Sparta
132 all out (29.5 overs)
Snoep has used five bowlers already, but no breakthrough as Gigani and Croes continue to knock off the runs. It’s looking very much as if Voorburg will be back at the top of the table before long.

Sparta

Another life for TdK as he pulls Singh high out over square leg, Visser oicks it up quickly but it’s dropping on him fast, gets two hands to it diving forward but can’t hold on. Van Luin loses his line rather, spears four down leg then is cut up over the slips by Niaz for four more and the hundred partnership. Niaz goes fifty two balls later, pulling in front of square for a couple, but gives it away next ball popping a leading edge up for Turmaine at short midwicket.Schoonheim joins de Kok, who’s on 44*.

Ball’s rather following him today. 150 up for VOC and this has been an impressive recovery, both bats in the thirties now, Nidamanuru still from Mulder’s End.

Klein junior back from the City End, but Ingram’s beginning to look like his vintage self, moving on to 62* as they take another drink. Heggelman’s content to play a supporting role, on 13* at this point. Another game that’s in the balance.

Turmaine brings himself on from the City End, but the counter-attack continues as De Kok slaps him through mid-on for four then slog-sweeps over midwicket for six. Niadamanuru from Mulder’s end now, de Kok content to take a look, blocks back a couple then turns to leg for one. Niaz gets after him from ball one though, slogged out high over midwicket, Visser’s tracking round but can’t quite get there and bounces just inside and over for four more. 61 the partnership now, at more or less a run a ball.

Sparta
132 all out (29.5 overs)
Which is not what you’d say about Westvliet, where Ahsan Malik has clipped Boissevain off his toes to Musa Ahmad at straightish midwicket, and Snoep is trapped in front by Shariz to complete the collapse. Shariz finishes with five for 19, Boissevain with four for 35, and Sparta lost all ten wickets for just 72 runs. All the momentum is with the home side.

Saqib Zulfiqar bowling now from the Pavilion End, and he finds the bottom edge of Lubbers’ bat, deflecting the ball into the stumps. Sahir Naqash in to join Raxworthy on 39*, with the game interestingly poised.

Niaz is not afraid to play his shots here, meets a short wide ball from Singh with a baseball slug and it’s away over second base for a ground rule double. Abid back, hint of width and a hard square drive races to the rope. Hundred up, and de Kok celebrates by pulling Abid hard in front of square for four more two balls later.

At De Diepput Daniel Doram tapped Mahesh Hans in front, and then had Aryan Kumar very well caught at cover by Boris Gorlee. At that point it was 119 for six, but Raza has just brought up his fifty with a meaty pull through square leg off Venter, and with Ammar Zaidi giving good support they’ve taken the total past 150. Gorlee turns to Patient Charumbira.

The Westvliet Massacre continues, as Ahmadi tries to cut a Shariz delivery which is too close to him and chops it into his stumps, and then Bukhari tries to slog-sweep Boissevain and holes out to Gigani at (let’s be charitable) wide long on. Maninder Singh joins Ahsan Malik in the middle, but three balls later he too plays on.

Singh’s bowling at a fair clip here, and when de Kok takes on a short ball it’s flashed past the pull and up off the lid. He’s down for a good while but he’s on his feet now, had a quick chat with wellwishers, presumably about his current whereabouts, the day of the week and/or who’s president. Looks to be alright now. Nasty blow though. Still Visser from the City end.

A double blow by Barresi with the ball: first he bowls Verhagen for 26, and then he removes Michael Hart, caught at point by Reece Mason. Ingram’s still there on 32*, but Excelsior are digging themselves a hole as, surprise, surprise! today’s returner from the wilderness proves to be none other than former international Daan van Bunge. There is no basis for the rumours that Carstjan Posthuma may soon be turning out for Rood en Wit.

No heroics from Kroesen today: he does pull Shariz away for four, but he miscues the next ball to midwicket, and Engelbrecht runs in to take the catch. Bukhari a Silent Witness at the non-striker’s end, as Khalid Ahmadi comes in at seven.

The wheels are coming off for Sparta against Voorburg’s leg-spinners. First Ferguson, on 34, clips Boissevain low to midwicket, where Musa Ahmad takes a fine diving catch. And then Shariz traps Clark in front as he prods forward. Thursday’s hero, Joost Kroesen, in to join Bukhari.

Edwards cuts Visser hard behind point for the fourth boundary of the day, Abid again too slow out of the blocks coming round from deep third, can only get a fingertip to it. Consolation for Visser on the final ball of the over though, dug in short and Fourie on the pull, top edge spirals toward vacant mid off, but Smal tracks back swiftly from extra to hold it over his shoulder. Captain to the crease as Tim de Kok joins Edwards. Vikram Singh into the attack from Mulder’s End.

Jain doing his best Edwards impression out there, fetches a sweep from outside off but can’t get it past midwicket, then brings out the reverse, top edge falls short of slip. Doesn’t survive the over though, last ball Dutt rips one through him from outside off and clips the bails. VOC three down, Fourie in to join Edwards now as we go to drinks. VRA have the early wickets they wanted, a lot resting on Edwards and the middle order, who have yet to contribute much this season. Perhaps today’s the day they step up? Still Tim de Kok, Schoonheim and Niaz to come, but not much recognised batting thereafter.

And another for Visser, big wicket too. Back of a length and Berry looks to run it wide to the slips off the face, but it’s flown to Singh at first slip, great take. Edwards at four, similar ball first up, similar shot too but no connection at all. Two balls later and an indside edge flies wide of the keeper for four to bring up the fifty, then an uppercut over the cordon four again. All happening out there.

First bowling change as Aryan Dutt replaces van Luin. Tidy from him as usual, just one off it. And a change at the City end too, Visser replaces Abid, targetting the pads, smattering of leg byes and singles. First boundary of the day comes in the next as O’Dowd takes a knee to Dutt and sweeps him up over backward point for four, then two balls later sweeps hard and low through midwicket and a misfield on the rope brings four more. Dutt turns one past the bat last ball of the over to oohs and ahhs, but nine off it.

Raza, as so often, falls through his hyperaggressive style: after smacking Klein for a four and a six and digging out a very good yorker, he tries to hit him over the top again and skies a steepling catch to Boissevain at cover. Abid finds Jain’s outside edge and a sharp chance for van Luin at second slip diving back in to his left, gets a hand to it but can’t cling on. Next over full and wide from van Luin Singh at slip holds one at first off Jain’s bottom edge, big appeal but pretty sure that was a bump. Abid loses his line and clips O’Dowd’s pads for four leg byes past Pereis. Too wide the other way two balls later and is cut for three through point. Looks to be doing a bit off the seam, van Luin’s pulled his length back some, but he’s not found a consistent line either, cut behind point for a couple by O’Dowd, then wide down leg. Driven back at him last ball of the over, plucks it out of the air, turns and throws down the non-striker’s stumps in a trice, was Jain back? The umpire thinks so, VRA look bewildered. Certainly a close one.

Good Morning or other timezone-appropriate salutation all, Round 7 is somehow upon us already. I’m here at the Bos for VRA vs VOC, while Rod will be providing overwatch today. We’ve cobbled together a hasty preview for you of course, do or die for those at the bottom of the pile, while Sparta and VCC will be looking to steal a march for Phase 2.
