Preview Round 12
Rod Lyall and Bertus de Jong 01/07/21
The knot in the middle of the table tightened a little more last weekend, and with eight points (or two wins) separating third from seventh there is still plenty to play for most teams in the competition. Even ACC, currently in eighth spot, are not yet completely out of the hunt, although most interest is likely to centre on which two of Voorburg, Excelsior, HBS and HCC join Punjab and VOC in the play-offs come August.
RL: The eight-pointer of the week is the clash between Punjab Rotterdam and Excelsior ’20 Schiedam at the Zomercomplex. Punjab had a six-wicket win when the sides met at the same ground back in May (Thurlede being too wet to be playable), and little we have seen since suggests that they will go into this game as anything other than favourites. Excelsior’s top-order brittleness continues to be a cause for concern, and although Tristan Stubbs is still a potential trump card, he can’t be expected to dig them out of trouble every week. If the Schiedammers have the sharper of the two attacks, with Klaas Roelfsema emerging as a valuable addition to the seam battery, Punjab’s boa constrictor tactics have served them well, most recently against a strong HBS batting line-up last Saturday, and their top six is capable of chasing most totals, especially at Fortress Zomercomplex.
BdJ: Now ten points clear of the danger zone Punjab can perhaps afford to relax a little, but there’s little indication that they’re taking the foot off the gas at the moment. Though their batting remains their principle strength, the addition of Sohail Bhatti and the development of Mubashar Hussain has meant skipper Tariq has not lacked for bowling options either. While Exclesior boast two of the most dependably dangerous bats in the league in Ingram and Stubbs, the relative fragility of the rest of the order means the pair cannot afford themselves the same license as Punjab’s big hitters. At a ground that traditionally rewards a degree of adventure with the bat, the hosts certainly hold the stronger hand.
RL: VOC Rotterdam slipped back towards the pack with last week’s defeat by Voorburg, and will be hoping that they can take a more complete side to the Bermweg for their encounter with Sparta 1888. The Capelle outfit’s performance against Excelsior last Saturday belied their lowly position on the table, and they might have had cause to be marginally more aggrieved when the rain put an end to proceedings. If their batting remains too reliant on the skills and resolution of Garnett Tarr, the knock by Mamoon Latif could suggest that their Belgian contingent will have more to offer in the latter part of the season, and the attack, spearheaded by Max Hoornweg and the evergreen Mudassar Bukhari, remains a menacing force. But it’s not often that Scott Edwards and Max O’Dowd both go cheaply, and even a below-strength VOC is likely to be up to the challenge Sparta present.
BdJ: If events at Hazelaarweg last week exposed VOC’s vulnerability to a decapitation strike, the question remains whether Sparta have the firepower to deliver. Bukhari has been in impressive form with the bat this season, but his relative lack of penetration with the ball thus far has been a problem Sparta have yet to remedy. While VOC’s middle order has looked rather brittle, especially in the absence of the stabilising presence of Pieter Seelaar, it will take a better performance from Sparta’s attack than we’ve seen this season to expose it and an improve performance with the bat to capitalise.
RL: Even a depleted Voorburg were truly impressive in their victory over VOC last week, skipper Bas de Leede stepping up to the mark with a fine all-round effort. They should be full of confidence for their meeting with VRA Amsterdam, whose batting implosion against HCC last Saturday was matched by some less than impressive catching. Giving Karl Nieuwoudt the new ball against VOC turned out to be an inspired move from De Leede, and if he can reproduce that form he will trouble most top orders in the competition, VRA’s not excepted. Injuries and other absences have meant that the Amsterdammers have been unable to establish a settled top six, and with Shirase Rasool having played only four games and Vikram Singh well below his best form – his century against Dosti apart, he has mustered 54 runs in eight innings – they have had to rely on skipper Peter Borren and the lower mid-order to dig them out of trouble. Voorburg’s batting, by contrast, has been pedestrian at times, but it has a solidity which has kept them in strong contention for a top four spot.
BdJ: Injuries, absences and under-performance have conspired to transform what initially looked a daunting VRA batting card into something of a liability over the course of the season, though the Amsterdammers can at least take heart in the impressive return of Quirijn Gunning lending their new ball attack an air of menace. Had they held their chances last weekend they would have comfortably defended their desultory total, and VCC have shown themselves capable of collapsing in the face of lesser bowling attacks, especially in the absence of Logan van Beek as lower-order backstop. Though the unheralded Mohit Hingorani has been quietly effective at the top of the order and Sybrand Engelbrecht has more than lived up to expectation the rest of the batting has been rather hit-and-miss. If VRA can produce anything like the performance with the ball they did last week, they could quickly find themselves with a winning position to squander.
RL: ACC produced their best performance of the season so far against a below-strength HBS in a rain-affected match at Craeyenhout on Ascension Day, but they will need to be at the top of their game if they are to repeat that victory at Het Loopveld this week. Young Zinesh Master’s outstanding debut five-for against Dosti last Sunday adds another dimension to the Amsterdammers’ attack, but skipper Anis Raza will need to be careful how he deploys him against an explosive HBS line-up to which Wesley Barresi has made a welcome return. Sahil Kothari has been the most effective with the bat for ACC, and although Ammar Zaidi, Raza, and now Chris Knoll have made useful contributions on occasion, the side has yet to put in a solid top-six effort other than that against HBS. With Tayo Walbrugh in superb form and the rest of the top order all producing consistent runs, not to mention a balanced attack spearheaded by Ryan Klein, HBS look likely to have too many guns for their hosts this time.
BdJ: Having noted Master’s impressive pre-season performance one does rather wonder where he’s been for the last few weeks, but fair to say his entrance was as dramatic as it was late. Bowling at HBS’ ever-more intimidating line-up is a different proposition to Dosti, however. The ACC top-order also had the luxury of facing a Ryan Klein-less HBS attack last time round, and his ten overs will likely do as much to shift the odds as the addition of Visée or Barresi on the batting side.
RL: HCC may have risked an embarrassing defeat after skittling VRA in the Amsterdamse Bos last week, but they did their NRR a power of good once they pulled off their slightly farcical victory, and that may stand them in good stead if the battle for places on the table goes down to the wire in August. They will hope to improve it still further on Saturday, when they entertain Dosti-United Amsterdam at De Diepput. Rahil Ahmed apart, Dosti’s batting has been consistently disappointing, and willing as their bowling may be, it lacks the cutting edge to trouble most teams. HCC’s four-man seam attack of Hidde Overdijk, Reinier Bijloos, Ollie Klaus and Henrico Venter, by contrast, has cutting power a-plenty, and with Clayton Floyd the competition’s leading wicket-taker it will take a massive reversal of form for Dosti to make enough runs to keep them in the game.
BdJ: If last year’s table-toppers are perhaps rather disappointed with how their season has unfolded thus far, Dosti have looked altogether too content with the prospect of picking up another wooden spoon. Though a top-four spot was always likely to be beyond Dosti in the absence of any overseas pros, it’s been the inconsistency of their established players that’s left the Amsterdammers winless again so far. Should Tewarie, Hans and Ahmed fire at once there’s enough talent in the rest of the side that earned points should be a reasonable possibility, one feels they’ll be taking the trip down to de Diepput more in hope than expectation.
RL’s picks: Punjab, VOC, Voorburg, HBS, HCC.
BdJ’s picks: Punjab, VOC, VRA, HBS, HCC.

Punjab edge clear as VOC lose to Voorburg
Rod Lyall 28/06/21
After more overnight rain on Friday it was perhaps not surprising that the bowlers were in command in Saturday’s Topklasse matches, or that only one side passed 150, the highest total of the day Sparta 1888’s 187 all out against Excelsior ‘20 at Thurlede.
Led by Garnett Tarr’s 71 and a brisk 45 from Mamoon Latif that effort, however, proved to be in vain, as the rain returned with Excelsior on a precarious 39 for three after 11.2 overs in reply, and no further play was possible.
This was the more regrettable because the game was fascinatingly poised, with Tristan Stubbs batting with Joost Kroesen and Mudassar Bukhari and Max Hoornweg in full cry for Sparta, and perhaps in the end both sides could reasonably have regarded the single point for a No result as preferable to defeat.
The rain brought a premature end at the Hazelaarweg as well, but in this case Voorburg were on the brink of victory over VOC Rotterdam and took the points on the DLS calculation.
Even without three pace bowlers, Viv Kingma (still unable to bowl), Logan van Beek and Ali Ahmed Qasim, Voorburg’s attack was disciplined and incisive enough to bowl VOC out for 136, Bas de Leede removing Scott Edwards and Max O’Dowd in the opening exchanges, well supported by an accurate ten-over spell from Karl Nieuwoudt.
De Leede returned to clean up the innings and finish with four for 24, but not before Jelte Schoonheim had hit a run-a-ball 55 to rescue his side from a complete debacle, sharing useful partnerships with Arnav Jain and Ramdas Upadhyaya.
In a splendid allround performance the Voorburg captain then produced his best innings of the season, making an unbeaten 57 and with Mohit Hingorani (39 not out) putting on 105 for the second wicket, so that when the weather intervened the Villagers were on 120 for one in 29.1 overs.
The DLS par score at this point was 57, so Voorburg’s winning margin was 63 runs.
Leaders Punjab Rotterdam took full advantage of VOC’s defeat, securing a five-wicket victory over HBS at Craeyenhout and opening up a five-point lead over their nearest rivals.
So severe were the effects of the overnight rain there that the match did not start until 15:30, reduced from the outset to 28 overs a side, and another shower soon cut another four overs, by which time HBS had already lost danger-man Tobias Visée.
Punjab’s attack might have been designed for such a situation, and Suleiman Tariq and his fellow-bowlers expertly contained the home side to 121 for seven, 41 of them from Tayo Walbrugh and a cameo 26 from Wesley Barresi, in his first innings for eighteen months.
Also returning, Saqib Zulfiqar benefited from the batters’ efforts to raise the tempo in the closing stages, removing both Walbrugh and Barresi and finishing with four for 25.
HBS fought hard in the field, but 121 never really seemed likely to be enough, and with all four Zulfiqars and Teja Nidamanuru all chipping in and even Ryan Klein coming in for some heavy punishment, the leaders reached their target with nine deliveries to spare.
The match between VRA Amsterdam and HCC in the Amsterdamse Bos had already been over for an hour and a half when the sides got under way at Craeyenhout, a comedy of batting errors seeing 18 wickets fall for just 137 runs in 25.1 overs.
Hidde Overdijk (four for 20) and Reinier Bijloos (three for 31) were instrumental in skittling VRA for 68, opener Eric Szwarczynski the only man to reach double figures with 16.
HCC might conceivably mount the defence that they were trying to gain maximum benefit for their net run rate, but their smash-and-grab approach nearly backfired when they lost four wickets for just one run and found themselves still needing two to win with only two wickets standing.
Henrico Venter was equal to the challenge, however, and saw them the short distance home, although it was Boris Gorlee’s run-a-ball 26 which had brought them to the brink of victory.
Quirijn Gunning, back from injury, led VRA’s counter-attack with three for 24, while Vikram Singh claimed three for 9.
At Sportpark Drieburg on Sunday ACC beat bottom side Dosti-United by five wickets, the match enlivened by a sensational debut by teenager Zeeshan Master, who took five for 30 as the home side collapsed to 121 all out.
Rahil Ahmed had again given Dosti a decent start with 49, but once Master started to run through the lower order only 24 from Waheed Masood offered any real resistance.
Dosti’s bowlers, especially spinners Asief Hoseinbaks and Mahesh Hans, made ACC fight for every run, but Chris Knoll’s 60 saw them to within two runs of victory, and they completed the win with almost 13 overs to spare.

Round 11 Preview
Bertus de Jong and Rod Lyall 25/06/2021
With the half way stage of the league phase behind us and the play-off phase on the horizon, jockeying for position on the Topklasse table is beginning to take a rather more urgent tone, especially for the teams hovering around the mid-table.
BdJ: Saturday’s match between VRA and HCC at the Bos would be an unexceptional mid-table fixture were it not for the introduction of play-offs this season. As it is both sides will be hard put to recover from a defeat if they’re to keep their top-four hopes alive. The hosts’ injury troubles continue to accumulate, with Quirijn Gunning still sidelined with a side strain and now Ben Cooper out with a thumb fracture. The VRA number three sat out Thursday’s Pro-Series fixture watching HCC’s Musa Nadeem construct a most impressive unbeaten match-winning century for the Hurricanes, and if the HCC opener can carry his form into the weekend VRA will have cause to worry.
RL: Matches such as this are indeed poster children for a play-off system, with both sides having plenty at stake in the knowledge that a place in the top four keeps their championship hopes alive. Whether HCC are really title contenders – their grievances over rained-off matches apart — depends on their winning matches like this, and doing so convincingly. Even without Damian Crowley they were much too strong for ACC last week, and VRA’s young attack and Borren-dependent batting line-up may struggle against the visitors’ strengths in both departments. That said, the Lions’ top order has shown signs of brittleness when put under pressure, and if Borren’s boys can step up to the mark this could be a lot closer than one might initially suppose.
BdJ: Meanwhile Voorburg will be looking to break back into the top four when they take on second-placed VOC at home at Westvliet, but will still be missing the new ball pairing of Logan van Beek and Vivian Kingma that had done so much to get them toward the top of the table early in the season. While the hosts still have plenty of bowling talent, it’s not unreasonable to ask where the wickets of VOC’s internationals are likely to come from, especially given the form of O’Dowd and skipper Pieter Seelaar, who hit 94 in the regional 50-over match on Thursday. Conversely the VCC batting has looked comparatively fragile in recent weeks, and over-reliant on Sybrandt Engelbrecht all season. VOC’s ranks will likely be thinned somewhat by injury however, with Seelaar himself in doubt owing to recurring back trouble, while Tim de Kok missed the pro-series games this week owing to concussion worries and Bobby Hanif is reportedly also ruled out due to knee trouble. Currently in fifth place, a loss need not end VCC’s ambitions, but the blow of three consecutive defeats to their confidence may be tough to bounce back from. Catching VOC understrength may just be the luck they need to get their season back on track.
RL: They certainly had luck going their way when the sides met back in early May, rain after a good Voorburg start leaving VOC a near-impossible DLS target. Over the piece though, and despite a couple of wobbles with the bat, VOC have looked a much more complete unit, and Edwards and O’Dowd remain a menacing presence at the top of the order. Should they go early the game would have a quite different complexion, especially if De Kok and Seelaar are missing, although Arnav Jain has been emerging as a key allrounder, valuable in the middle order as well as fulfilling an important role in VOC’s varied attack. The same applies to Voorburg’s Aryan Dutt, but even he and Engelbrecht cannot entirely cover their side’s stop-start batting form. With 126 runs at 18.00 and just three wickets so far Bas de Leede has perhaps been finding the burden of captaincy weighing too heavily upon his shoulders, and this would be the ideal moment for him to step up with the kind of performance of which he is undoubtedly capable.
BdJ: Title-holders Excelsior ‘20 have an opportunity to consolidate their claim on a berth in the play-offs when they welcome Sparta 1888 to Thurlede. Back on home turf and coming off a convincing win at VCC last week, the Schiedammers will be confident of adding four points to their tally against Sparta, who have struggled both with bat and ball all season. While overseas Garnett Tarr has been in fine form since his arrival he has received precious little support, the poor form of Sparta’s Belgian contingent a particular worry both for Sparta and for Belgium, who travel to Malta next week without the benefit of their planned Dutch warm-up tour. The cancellation also denied Latif, Raza and Butt the chance to play themselves into a bit of form ahead of Saturdays game, leaving the Sparta batting card looking thin indeed. Excelsior meanwhile have a solid line-up built around the middle order core of Ingram and Stubbs, and with Niels Etman in fine rhythm with the ball too they look to be hitting their stride.
RL: Excelsior will have not have forgotten the frustration of these sides’ encounter at the Bermweg back in My, when they reduced Sparta to 86 for six and were chasing a DLS target of 73, only to have the umpires declare the ground unfit and take the players off. Now fourth and just six points ahead of HCC in seventh spot, they will be doubly keen to pouch the points ahead of next week’s tough match against Punjab. Dropping Tim Etman, who has been struggling against the new ball, down the order and bringing in Luuk Kroesen to open worked like a charm last week, though admittedly the Schiedammers chasing a low total. As for Sparta, there’s a limit to how much Garnett Tarr and Mudassar Bukhari can be expected to do to dig them out of trouble, valiant as Tarr’s lone-hand century was against HBS last Saturday. Max Hoornweg remains a threat with the new ball, however, and he and Bukhari at their best could cause the Excelsior batting line-up some problems.
BdJ: Table-toppers Punjab Rotterdam will be heading to Craeyenhout to take on third-placed HBS hoping to put some distance between themselves and the pack. The Crows have accumulated an impressive record of wins thus far without ever looking entirely convincing, their place in the top four owing much to the imperious form of lead scorer Tayo Walbrugh. But with Julian de Mey and Navjit Singh in decent touch with the bat, Toby Visée at the top and perhaps even Wesley Barresi tempted out of retirement if last week is any indication, they’ll be happy enough with their batting. The bowling is perhaps more of a concern, especially given the strength and depth of the Punjab batting line-up, which racked up 375 against Dosti last weekend even without a substantial score for Stephan Myburgh. The match has the look of a potential high-scoring hitting contest, though as I recall I said something similar last season and look how that turned out …
RL: The absence of Saqib Zulfiqar has made surprisingly little difference to Punjab, who thoroughly deserve their place at the head of the table. Their nagging attack, perhaps somewhat underestimated as a factor in their success – they did, after all, bowl a full-strength VOC out for 136 – will face another of their tougher assignments in HBS on Craeyenhout’s artificial outfield, and neither should the potential contribution of Ryan Klein in cutting through the visitors’ top order be left out of account. This first-vs-third clash is, indeed, a mouth-watering prospect, and if the Crows may be slightly surprised to find themselves so well placed their performances so far, with Walbrugh the batting phenomenon of the season, thoroughly justify that position. High scoring or not, this game is undoubtedly an eight-pointer.
BdJ: At the other end of the table Dosti-United are still looking for their first win since a more innocent age, though they’ll be waiting at least until Sunday when they take on ACC at Drieburg on their now traditional 24-hour delay. Fair to say that their 204-run loss to Punjab does not augur well, nor indeed do any of their other results thus far. While ACC are unlikely to subject the Dosti bowling to the same sort of sustained assault that Punjab did, and again much of the Dosti top order got starts last week, one suspects the demoralising effects of such a drubbing will be felt even by a side as irrepressibly optimistic as Dosti’s. If they are able to bounce back though this may be their best hope of finally getting points on the board against an ACC side that suffered an almost equally comprehensive defeat away at HCC last week. Knocked over for 104 and managing just a single wicket in the HCC reply, ACC continue to look fragile when Sahil Kothari fails at the top of the order. Though other bats have got a score or two Kothari remains the only one to have passed 200 for the season, while no ACC bowler has yet got to double figures in terms of wickets. Neither side look likely to challenge for a top-four place this season, but there will be plenty of pride on the line at least at the “other, other” Amsterdam derby.
RL: Sooner or later, one feels, the bits-and-pieces efforts of Vinoo Tewarie’s side will come together in an ice-breaking performance, and there are not going to be many opportunities this season which are better than this one. A rain-affected victory over HBS apart, ACC have not been able to replicate last year’s better-than-expected achievements, and while Kothari has been impressive on occasion and Ammar Zaidi has provided solidity in the middle order, overall the batting has struggled for runs, leaving the bowlers with too much to do. For Dosti, the return of Rahil Ahmed has undoubtedly strengthened the batting, and in Waheed Masood, Asief Hoseinbaks, Mahesh Hans and Sami Naseri they have an attack which, that 375 notwithstanding, is capable of causing problems for opposing batters. If they can overcome the trauma of the Zomercomplex (which does sound a bit like a psychiatric condition), Dosti could spring a surprise here.
