Round 15 preview

Rod Lyall 02/08/19

After the usual end-of-July week off, this year a busman’s holiday for VOC Rotterdam and for the youngsters engaged in Under-19 WCQ duty, the Topklasse resumes on Sunday, in the midst of a four-match T20I series against the United Arab Emirates.  We understand that the national squad members have been released for Sunday’s matches, although the bowlers are supposed to be limited to five overs apiece. Oh, and it’s the time of year when, as visas begin to expire, overseas players start to return home.

Against this background, leaders Excelsior ‘20 travel to De Diepput to take on their main challengers, HCC. As others have faltered these two sides have emerged as the season’s most consistent, and this promises to be one of the most absorbing matches of the year, as well as one of the most significant. An Excelsior victory would extend the gap between the sides to five points and effectively put the title out of reach for the Hagenaars, but Tonny Staal’s men have the all-round ability to keep themselves in the hunt against an Excelsior outfit which, for all its consistency, has needed some determined performances in the field to defend disappointing efforts with the bat. The outcome may depend on which side’s local players step up at this crucial point in the competition.

Fresh from their triumph in the inaugural ‘European Champions League’ in La Manga, VOC Rotterdam return to reality for their encounter at Hazelaarweg with the other principal contenders for the title, ACC. And they will, we understand, do so without Pierce Fletcher, further weakening an attack which has struggled all season.  For ACC, no less than for HCC, a win here is absolutely vital if they are to retain a chance of snatching the championship, and they will be hoping that they can recapture the dominating form which took them to the top of the table in the first half of the season. To do that they will need their top five to take full advantage of VOC’s limitations with the ball, while at the same time finding a way of containing O’Dowd, Seelaar and Edwards.

Among the known unknowns and the unknown unknowns, one thing is certain: HBS Craeyenhout will be without skipper Tobias Visée when they take on Voorburg on the second ground at De Diepput. He, of course, is in Canada, and his side will undoubtedly miss the mayhem he so often creates among opposing attacks. Their opponents will be without Matt Smit, but will still have his brother Nic, who has provided a solid core in what has all too frequently been a disappointingly irresolute batting line-up. Who else plays, and under what limitations, remains to be seen, but the bottom line is that an HBS defeat here would definitively end whatever thin theoretical hope they might have of remaining in the title race. A fairer assessment would be that this is really a mid-table clash where pride and individual reputations are at stake rather than any larger issues.

The delayed arrival of Quick Haag’s two Indian players may now turn out to their advantage, locked as they are in a tight relegation battle with Sparta. Every match that these two sides play in the coming month will be vital, and Quick will travel to Sportpark Drieburg on Sunday knowing that they really need to raise their game against Dosti United. As so often, the contribution of Jay Bista will provide a crucial subplot: if he fires Quick will be in contention, but should Dosti remove him early their chances of claiming the points will be greatly improved. How many of Dosti’s overseas contingent remain will also be a factor: one late arrival who could balance Bista is Abhinav Bali, who has shown that he can give his side plenty of momentum in the initial powerplay.

With one point from their last five games Sparta 1888 badly need some good news, their fortunes since the turn contrasting unfavourably with those of Peter Borren’s resurgent VRA Amsterdam. Favourites (if that’s the right word) for relegation for the first half of the season, VRA have climbed way from the foot of the table, and a win in the Amsterdamse Bos this Sunday would further enhance their prospects of remaining in the top flight. Vikram Singh returns from a more successful Under-19 qualifier than many of his national team-mates, and with their combination of youth and experience VRA seem likely to be too strong for a Sparta side more dependent than ever on old stagers Mudassar Bukhari and Atse Buurman.

Rod Lyall’s tips: Excelsior, ACC, Voorburg, Dosti, VRA.

An absorbing August awaits

Rod Lyall 25/07/19

Whatever you think about the current competition structure – and I have reservations about several aspects of it – you have to admit that this season’s Topklasse is providing the most enthralling battle at both ends of the table that we have seen for some time.

At least three sides are still in with a real chance of winning the championship, while in the lower reaches, although there are two main candidates for relegation, there are a further three who still need at least one more win to ensure that they will be playing Topklasse cricket next year.

The equations are, of course, complicated by the fact that teams have played differing numbers of games, and that the table is therefore determined by average rather than absolute points.

So Excelsior ’20 may currently be three points ahead of their nearest rivals, but since they have played one match more than HCC it’s the difference in the average points (0.12) which is the true margin.

This makes it correspondingly more difficult to calculate how much the leaders will need to do in order to be sure of taking the title, especially since in a summer like this one there’s no guarantee that more matches won’t be lost to the weather.

What we can say, however, is that if Excelsior win all four of their remaining games, they will finish with a points average of 1.71, while the best HCC can do is 1.63.

If Excelsior were to lose just one match, though, they would finish on 1.59 – and that makes the clash between the Schiedammers and HCC at De Diepput on 4 August one of the many four-pointers which are scattered through the coming weeks’ programme.

By the same token, HCC’s away match against ACC the following week is likely to be crucial as well: by winning all four of their remaining games ACC could finish on 1.53, just ahead of HCC even if they won their other three matches, but then they would need Excelsior to have lost two games if they were to become champions.

HBS Craeyenhout, despite their recent defeats, are not mathematically out of the race, but the odds are decidedly not in their favour: not only would they need to win all their remaining matches, including victories over Excelsior (11 August) and ACC (18 August), but they would need Excelsior to lose two further games, and HCC also to lose twice.

At the other end of the table, VRA Amsterdam’s four wins on the trot before their defeat by Dosti United on Sunday have thrown the relegation battle wide open, with just two wins separating current wooden-spooners Quick Haag from Voorburg, in sixth place.

The average points gap is greater than that would suggest, at 0.40, but there are so many matches between the lower sides scheduled for the run in that one is very quickly overwhelmed by possible scenarios.

To take Quick first: of their four games still to play, two are against the sides immediately above them in the table, VRA (11 August) and Sparta 1888 (18 August).

Both are therefore of huge significance if Quick are to escape the drop to the Hoofdklasse.

Sparta 1888 will also meet two of their closest rivals: VRA (4 August) and Quick (18 August), with the latter game perhaps being the one which finally decides which team is relegated.

For those immediately above Quick and Sparta, there is the comfort of knowing that it would now take a marked reversal of form by both of those teams to bring their own status into question.

Just one more win by Voorburg, VOC or VRA would mean that Sparta would have to win three out of four to have any chance of overtaking them, and since both VOC and VRA are due to play the Capelle side they do to a great extent have the outcome in their own hands.

For Quick Haag it’s an ever bigger ask: as well as Sparta, they still have to play Dosti, VRA and VOC, and even three wins would probably only bring them level on points with their rivals, and with a worse points average.

The truth is that it would take an extraordinary combination of events for anyone other than either Sparta or Quick to be relegated, and that their encounter on 18 August will likely be the four-pointer to end all four-pointers.

One thing is certain: we’re in for a more interesting (and for some nerve-wracking) August than many recent seasons have provided.

The mixture as before

Rod Lyall 22/07/19

It was, on the face of it, a Topklasse Sunday on which not a lot happened: the top four sides all won, the bottom four all lost, there was minimal movement in the table.

But for those hoping to peg back leaders Excelsior and for those propping up the table alike, with just four rounds of matches left, time is beginning to run out. And in the meantime, we are being treated to some absorbing cricket.

Most of the excitement this weekend seemed to involve VRA Amsterdam, who withstood a determined challenge in a rain-affected match on Saturday to hold off VOC Rotterdam, and then came close to pulling off a notable run chase of their own on Sunday before conceding defeat to Dosti United.

Rain on Saturday morning delayed the toss, and the match had been reduced to 38 overs a side before VRA began their innings.

Once again they lost early wickets, but a solid stand between Ben Cooper and Peter Borren put them into a much better position by the time the weather again intervened and a further 13 overs came off.

Cooper made 30, Borren 66, and after VRA finished on 155 for five the DLS adjustment left VOC chasing 189 to win.

Dirk van Baren gave his side a chance with a 20-ball 31, and then skipper Pieter Seelaar kept up the momentum with 62, made from just 53 deliveries, before departing hit wicket off Brandon Graber with 33 still needed.

David Mullett made 33, Pierce Fletcher hit a six in a brief stay at the crease, but with 15 needed off the last the tail could only manage seven, and VRA won by 7 runs.

Hoping to make it two out of two on Sunday, VRA ran into a Dosti United side who turned in one of their most solid performances of the season, and lost by 25 runs.

Batting first, Dosti recovered from the early loss of Vinoo Tewarie and Abhinav Bali, both falling to the returning Haseeb Gul Mia, to post 246 for six, with Taruwar Kohli (81) and Amitoze Singh (92) putting on 161 for the third wicket.

After they had both departed Rahil Ahmed (36 not out) and Anees Davids (24) kept the scoreboard moving, and VRA found themselves facing a very substantial target.

They made a disastrous start, two wickets for Kuldeep Diwan and one for Davids reducing them to 5 for three, but then Cooper and Borren again rebuilt the innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 148.

Borren was eventually caught behind off Davids for 43, but Cooper went on, for the second time this season, to make a century in a losing cause off the Dosti attack, hitting 114 at almost a run a ball.

When he was trapped in front by Mahesh Hans 68 were still needed with nine overs remaining, but the scoring now largely devolved upon Mitch Lees, and although he contributed 44 wickets continued to fall at the other end; he was eventually last out, a fifth wicket for Davids at a cost of 33 runs, with the total on 221. Diwan finished with three for 34.

Meanwhile at Thurlede, Excelsior ‘20 took another step towards their third title in four years with a 46-run victory over VOC Rotterdam.

The conventional wisdom in Schiedam is that anything approaching 200 at Thurlede is likely to be a winning score, and Excelsior’s 192 for seven, of which Tom Heggelman contributed a steady 52 and Branton Parchment a rather brisker 42, proved to be more than enough for their bowlers to defend.

Parchment removed both VOC openers, one of them the prolific Max O’Dowd, to rock the Rotterdam side back on their heels, and although Van Baren and Seelaar both made 26 and Mullett 25, by the time VOC had been reduced to 94 for seven the game was effectively up.

Another fine spell from Rens van Troost was this time rewarded with wickets, his figures three for 26, and there were three for Parchment as well at a cost of 24; the tail rallied somewhat to get VOC up to 146, but that was well short of what they needed.

HCC maintained their pursuit of the leaders by securing an even more decisive victory over Voorburg at Westvliet, the margin here being 80 runs.

With Bryce Street making 81, his seventh half-century in 12 innings, and smaller contributions from Boris Gorlee (42), Bharat Itagi (33) and Matt Hay (30 not out), HCC ran up 239 for six, and Nick Smit was again left to carry the Voorburg innings almost single-handed when the home side replied.

They had started promisingly enough, reaching 79 before the third wicket fell, but thereafter no-one apart from Smit was able to reach double figures, and the side were all out for 159, Smit left not out on 73.

Ali Ahmed Qasim took three for 37 for HCC, and there were two wickets apiece for Olivier Klaus, Hay and Itagi.

At Sportpark Bermweg ACC kept their title hopes alive by beating Sparta 1888 by 28 runs, but the Capelle side could take some consolation in having put up a rather more convincing show with the bat than they had against Dosti the week before.

ACC have had their own issues batting in recent weeks, and their total of 186 all out, made in exactly 50 overs, was due in no small measure to the contributions of Brady Barends (32) and Anis Raza (44 not out), batting at seven and eight respectively; Jean Marais was again the most impressive of the top order, making 32 before he was run out.

Playing a more restrained innings than usual, Ali Raza led the way for Sparta with 43 before hitting a return catch to his namesake, but it was left to Mudassar Bukhari to keep his side’s hopes alive with a fighting 46.

Wickets kept falling at the other end, however, and when Bukhari was last man out the Sparta total was just 158.

In Tobias Visée’s last match before leaving for the Canadian T20 tournament the HBS Craeyenhout batting line-up flicked back to dominant mode against neighbours Quick Haag: with Visée himself hitting a 60-ball 88 which included 12 fours and four sixes, he and Zac Elkin started with 120 for the first wicket, and then Elkin, who finished with 85, and Wesley Barresi added 154 for the fourth.

Barresi went on to make 110 from just 92 deliveries, again with 12 fours and four sixes, before becoming the first of a consolation hat-trick for Prathamesh Dake which left HBS on 323 for seven at the close.

Berend Westdijk then effectively Quick’s hopes by taking three wickets, including the vital one of Jay Bista, within the first five overs, and although Jeroen Brand (37), Lesley Stokkers (48) and Sumeet Diwan (23) fought a rearguard action, Quick were dismissed for 142.

Westdijk finished with three for 27, while Zak Gibson ran through the middle order, taking four for 16.
